Chris Burnell: Youth Skills Project Worker

Apprentices

Martin Kerr continues to work towards completion of there NVQ level 2 in wood occupations, starting his second year at the college in September 2008. Feedback from the college on his development has been positive with no problems.

Anthony Bates is now working towards NVQ level 3 and has the support of his work placement “John Touchwood” and the Morlo team, Anthony had expressed concerns regarding the level 3, but after consultation with the college they are confident that he will achieve the qualification.

Ken Myers made the decision to leave the project and work full time, as a self-employed joiner in September 2008. All concerned in the project agreed this to be a positive outcome for Ken, although Ken did not complete NVQ level 3 he has gained sustainable employment through the project and the skills he has gained.

Since Ken has left the project Ashley Beck as been appointed, Ashley is an Environmental Apprentice who is working towards NVQ level 2 in environmental conservation with Coleg Llysfasi , and the project is looking at courses in sustainable technology e.g. solar panels and wind turbines.

Youth and Education
The project continues to working closely with the education department with the Not an Easy Option ending in July 2008 it is hoped that with funding a similar project will be up and running with a three month pilot scheme working closely with like minded organisations in January. Chris and the apprentice will be playing a part in this scheme, working with youths in the Penrhos Workshop.
Two excluded youths from the Not An Easy Option have shown an interest in continuing to work with Chris and the apprentice project, and are now currently on work experience every Friday.
